A More Complete Way to Understand Your Health

Many people come to functional medicine because they feel unheard, rushed, or like their symptoms are being treated in isolation. Dr. Jill Hicks created this program for patients who want space to be truly understood, and who want a clear, compassionate plan for feeling better.

Functional medicine looks at your health as an interconnected story. Instead of asking “What diagnosis fits?” we look deeper at “What is driving how you feel?” This approach allows us to understand the patterns behind fatigue, digestive issues, stress intolerance, hormonal shifts, and other chronic concerns.

It’s a slower, more thoughtful kind of care; one that meets you where you are.

What Functional Medicine Means Here

At Scarlet Oak Wellness, functional medicine isn’t a trend or a quick fix. It’s a collaborative process grounded in curiosity and respect for your lived experience.

Together, we explore:

  • How your symptoms relate to one another

  • How stress, lifestyle, and environment influence your health

  • How your digestive, hormonal, and detoxification systems are functioning

  • What your personal history reveals about the why behind your symptoms

This approach helps us build a plan that feels realistic, supportive, and personal to you, not a generic protocol handed out to everyone.

Who This Program Often Helps

Patients who thrive with functional medicine are usually people who:

  • Have ongoing fatigue or low energy that doesn’t match their effort

  • Experience digestive discomfort or irregularity

  • Feel like their stress response is “stuck on overdrive”

  • Struggle with hormonal imbalances or weight shifts

  • Have autoimmune or inflammatory concerns

  • Have been told “your labs look normal” but still don’t feel well

Most importantly, they’re ready to understand their health in a deeper, more connected way.

How Does the Process Work?

Functional Medicine appointments can be accessed in person or via telehealth. This is a thorough process and our appointments are very detailed. We begin with appointments that combine cutting-edge diagnostic testing with a thorough review of diet and lifestyle factors. Specifically, we use a 3 body system clinical model where we focus on identifying and healing imbalances within the Neuroendocrine, GI, and Detoxification systems of the body. We then take this information to customize and create a program that is unique to you.

Then we implement an ongoing wellness plan with diet and lifestyle changes, and implement a supplement plan to act therapeutically to correct any imbalances the tests showed. We work closely with you along the entire way, making tweaks and adjusting the program as your needs evolve through the healing process.

Many people feel frustrated when they are handed a prescription and sent home, or told to “lose some weight” but have no idea what that means and how it will make them feel better. Functional Medicine is ideal for these people, the entire system is built around patient education and giving YOU the tools to achieve optimal health, while also guiding you through tailored protocols.

  • There’s no fixed timeline because every person’s health story is different. Most people work with Dr. Hicks for several months, especially when addressing long-standing concerns like fatigue, digestive issues, or hormonal imbalance. Some patients continue with periodic check-ins for ongoing support once they’re feeling better.

  • Testing is personalized and only suggested when it will provide meaningful clarity. Common options include hormone panels, stool testing for digestive function, nutrient assessments, or evaluations of detoxification pathways. Dr. Hicks will explain the purpose of each test so you can make informed choices.

  • Absolutely. Functional medicine complements, not replaces, conventional care. Many patients continue seeing their PCP for annual exams, medications, or urgent needs while using functional medicine to explore deeper root causes and support long-term wellness.

  • Yes. Many patients who come to functional medicine feel like they’re “doing everything right” but still don’t feel like themselves. Functional medicine looks for underlying patterns and imbalances that aren’t always visible on routine labs.

  • While there’s overlap, functional medicine takes a systems-based approach — meaning it looks at how all your body systems interact, rather than treating each symptom separately. It focuses heavily on root causes, lifestyle, and individualized care while integrating both traditional and modern perspectives.

  • Functional medicine does not replace therapy or psychiatric care, but it can offer support by addressing physical factors that influence mood and resilience — such as sleep quality, gut health, inflammation, and stress physiology.
